Youth Activism

Across the country, young people are advocating for church-state separation and equality in their schools and communities. No matter who you are or where you live, you can be a part of the nationwide movement for church-state separation.

Church-state separation is about much more than just religious freedom.

That’s why AU fights for issues that affect Americans of all backgrounds.

AU fights to protect

LGBTQ Rights

Separation of church and state ensures that religion can’t be used to deny civil rights protections to LGBTQ people. AU protects the rights of LGBTQ youth by fighting Christian nationalism and advocating for everyone’s freedom to be themselves.

Reproductive Freedom

Religious freedom demands the right to an abortion so people can make their own decisions about their bodies and families. AU is fighting to ensure that young people don’t grow up in a world with fewer reproductive rights than older generations.

Educational Freedom

Private school vouchers divert public funds away from public schools to private, mostly religious schools with discriminatory policies. AU fights every day to preserve inclusive public education and protect the religious freedom of all students.

Racial and Religious Equality

Christian nationalist groups have joined forces with other extremist groups to undermine the progress for racial justice and religious equality. AU has been fighting white Christian nationalism for decades, and will continue to do so in legislatures and the courts.

What we fight for

We envision a nation where everyone can freely choose a faith and support it voluntarily, or follow no religious or spiritual path at all, and where the government does not promote religion over non-religion or favor one faith over another.

I think that what’s really unique about AU is not only realizing that Gen. Z organizers deserve to be paid for their labor but also investing in the educational aspects. AU really cares about not just mobilizing a new generation of church-state separation advocates but also making sure they’re informed. Nicole Li, Youth Organizing Fellow class of 2022

Congress needs to hear from you!

Urge your legislators to co-sponsor the Do No Harm Act today.

The Do No Harm Act will help ensure that our laws are a shield to protect religious freedom and not used as a sword to harm others by undermining civil rights laws and denying access to health care.
