Former Americans United Executive Director the Rev. Barry W. Lynn has just published a three-volume set of his memoirs, one volume of which is devoted exclusively to his time with AU.
Lynn served as AUâs leader from 1992-2017. His memoir is titled Paid to Piss People Off (Blue Cedar Press). Volume one, âPeace,â covers the years Lynn worked to oppose the draft during the Vietnam War. Volume two, âPorn,â deals with Lynnâs years with the American Civil Liberties Union, when he frequently sparred with Reagan administration Attorney General Edwin Meese over the latterâs efforts to crack down on sexually explicit materials. Volume three, âPrayer,â focuses on Lynnâs quarter century with Americans United.
In a recent interview with Religion News Service, Lynn reflected on his time with Americans United, remarking, âMy advice to people who want to change the world is to never give up trying to do it, and there are going to be setbacks or there are going to be victories; and the second, never forget those people that are behind the causes.â
