A candidate who sought to become Idaho’s next governor promised that if she was elected, “Christ will reign” in the state.

Janice McGeachin (R), who is currently the state’s lieutenant governor, told a talk-radio host last month, “God calls us to pick up the sword and fight, and Christ will reign in the state of Idaho.” (The interview was first reported by People For the American Way’s Right Wing Watch.

Blogger Hemant Mehta reported that McGeachin has a long history of pushing Christian nationalist views. Mehta noted that she appeared in a promotional video for a group that opposed COVID restrictions in the state holding a Bible in one hand and a handgun in the other.

Observed Mehta, “This isn’t about Jesus. This is about worshiping Donald Trump and whatever the MAGA cultists want and doing it all under the banner of Christ.”

The GOP primary was held May 17. McGeachin, who had been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, lost to incumbent Gov. Brad Little, capturing about 31% of the vote.
