Last week, Americans United and its allies filed a lawsuit on behalf of more than 30 Oklahoma residents – among them parents, public school teachers and faith leaders – to stop state Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters from spending millions of taxpayer dollars on Bibles and forcing them into public schools.
This legal action, filed in the Oklahoma Supreme Court, is getting a lot of attention.
The lead plaintiff in the case, the Rev. Lori Walke, was quoted in several media outlets, among them the Oklahoma City Oklahoman; KGOU, an NPR affiliate in Norman; the Enid News & Eagle; and KOAM, a television station in Pittsburg, Kansas.
Plaintiffs Erika Wright and the Rev. Mitch Randall were quoted by the Associated Press, KFOR-TV and KWTN-TV in Oklahoma City, and McClatchy News.
Americans United President and CEO Rachel Laser also appeared in several stories, among them KJRH-TV and Fox23, both in Tulsa.
This is just a sample, and we know there are more stories to come. The case is attracting statewide and national attention because it’s a direct challenge to a reckless Christian Nationalist gambit to violate the religious neutrality of public education.
As AU’s Laser is fond of saying, “Not on our watch!” We’ve successfully put the spotlight on Walters’ machinations. We won’t let up.
