Protecting religious freedom doesn’t happen by accident—it requires elected leaders who understand, champion, and defend it. This session, featuring Rachel Deitch of the American Humanist Association and Center for Freethought Equality and hosted by AU’s Public Policy Counsel David Carter will explore how advocates, faith leaders, and community members are helping build a growing network of lawmakers committed to church-state separation and inclusive religious freedom.

AU President & CEO Rachel Laser, Paul Raushenbush of Interfaith Alliance, and Fish Stark of American Humanist Association will engage in conversation about the societal context that led to the writing of the “Religious Liberty For All: Celebrating This Founding Freedom at America 250” report.

The American conservative movement has never been closer to advancing its “traditional family values” agenda nationwide. White Christian nationalists at the state and federal levels have worked to restrict abortion access; to allow faith-based adoption agencies to discriminate against same-sex couples and religious minorities; and to kneecap efforts towards universal childcare. Even so, the vast majority of Americans—of all faiths and none—continue to support a pluralistic democracy. So how can we resist together? How can we push towards a future that embraces all families as they come? This panel will bring together faith leaders and activists to carve a path forward for our families and communities.

Rachel will join Rabbi Aaron Torop in a conversation about the ongoing threat of white Christian Nationalism—the dangerous belief that our laws and policies must reflect the lie that America is, and must remain, a Christian nation founded for its white Christian inhabitants. This ideology seeks to privilege one religion over all others, threatening both religious and civil freedoms, and dismantling our democracy in the process. Rachel will also share the important role Americans United has played for nearly 80 years defending core constitutional principles and provide insight into the current attempts to undermine civil rights.

This webinar will feature an expert group of atheist, humanist, and religious voices who challenge the assumption that religious freedom primarily belongs to people of faith, while church-state separation is treated as a niche concern of the nonreligious.
