America’s public schools serve students from a wide array of backgrounds, both religious and nonreligious. Decisions about whether, when or how to pray should be left to parents and students themselves.

All public school students have the right to voluntarily pray and engage in other non-disruptive religious activities. But students should never be intimidated or pressured to pray by teachers, coaches, other school officials or other students.

The rights and beliefs of all students should be respected. That’s why Americans United opposes school-sponsored prayer in public schools.
