What We Believe
The wall of separation between church and state protects us all. It makes our country more fair, more equal and more inclusive.
Religious freedom is about fairness. We don't treat people differently because their beliefs are different from our own.
We envision an America where everyone can freely choose a faith and support it voluntarily, or follow no religious or spiritual path at all, and where the government does not promote religion over non-religion or favor one faith over another.
Who We Are
We are lawyers and lobbyists, students and activists, religious leaders and impassioned Americans.
We are people of faith and people who don't profess any particular faith.
We are a community that includes and welcomes people of all genders, races, ethnicities, religions or beliefs, sexual orientations, ages, classes and abilities.
What We Do
We use high-impact litigation, powerful lobbying and grassroots advocacy to ensure that:
- Religion does not dictate public policy.
- The government does not tell Americans what to believe or how to practice their faith.
- Discrimination is not justified under the guise of religion.
Americans United for Separation of Church and State is a nonpartisan educational and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing the constitutional principle of church-state separation as the only way to ensure freedom of religion, including the right to believe or not believe, for all Americans.
Americans United defends church-state separation in Congress and the state legislatures. We monitor legislation that affects church-state separation, offer expert testimony and alert citizens to bills that infringe on church-state separation.
Americans United defends church-state separation in courtrooms across the land. From state courts to the U.S. Supreme Court, we stand up for the constitutional principles that ensure freedom of conscience. We are regularly involved in a large number of cases, initiating lawsuits and providing legal counsel and support in other cases.
As a unique multi-faith community, AU is a place for youth activists to become involved in the work of maintaining religious freedom and ensuring that people are not discriminated against by someone who believes differently than they do. Americans United’s Youth Advisory Council helps to promote our mission and goals to young people.
Our Faith Leaders United initiative is a theologically diverse network of faith leaders from across the country dedicated to safeguarding religious freedom for all people. We believe that religion should lift up, protect, and serve others. With our support, Faith leaders all over the nation are leading their communities in the fight against discrimination in the name of religion.
Americans United educates the American people about the importance of church-state separation. We publish the nation’s only magazine devoted exclusively to church-state news, we offer blog posts daily and we welcome opportunities to discuss AU’s perspective on television, radio, print media and the internet.
