Americans United, ACLU & Allies: Supreme Court Should Not Mandate Religious Exemptions From Maine’s COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

"Religious freedom doesn’t provide immunity from life-threatening diseases or from laws that are meant to protect everyone equally. The court should let Maine’s vaccination requirements stand because they protect health care workers and the vulnerable patients they serve," said Alex J. Luchenitser, AU's associate vice president and associate legal director.

Americans United And Lambda Legal Sue U.S. Dept. Of Health And Human Services For Funding LGBTQ Discrimination In Refugee Foster Care Program

“The foundational American principle of church-state separation promises freedom without favor and equality without exception for everyone. The federal government is reneging on that constitutional promise by allowing a taxpayer-funded agency to discriminate against Kelly Easter because she doesn’t live according to its religious beliefs," said Rachel Laser, president and CEO of Americans United.

Americans United, ACLU & Allies: Court Should Not Mandate Religious Exemptions From New York Requirement That Health Care Workers Be Vaccinated Against COVID-19

“Religious freedom doesn’t provide immunity from life-threatening diseases or from laws that are meant to protect everyone equally. The court should uphold New York’s vaccination requirements because they protect health care workers and the vulnerable patients they serve," said Alex J. Luchenitser, associate vice president and associate legal director of Americans United.

Americans United Urges Supreme Court To Protect Religious Freedom By Affirming That Boston Is Not Required To Fly The Christian Flag

"The Supreme Court should not force the City of Boston to fly a Christian flag at city hall," said Rachel Laser, president and CEO of Americans United. "It was bad enough when the Court ignored church-state separation by allowing a towering Christian cross to remain on public land in Bladensburg, Maryland. But to force any American city to erect new religious displays would not only undermine the foundational principle of church-state separation, it would play right into the hands of Christian nationalists who want the government to force everyone to live by their beliefs."

Americans United Denounces Texas Abortion Ban That Undermines Both Reproductive And Religious Freedom

“Abortion bans are the result of the crumbling of church-state separation. The First Amendment prohibits the government from imposing one set of religious beliefs on others, but Texas' new draconian law and other attempts by states to ban reproductive freedom do just that. Blocking abortion access is just one item on the Christian nationalist agenda that religious extremists and their lawmaker allies are pushing, to force all of us to live by their beliefs," said AU President and CEO Rachel Laser.

"We applaud the Department of Education for its willingness to reconsider this harmful regulation, and for sending the message to colleges, universities and their students that this wrong may soon be righted," said Richard B. Katskee, vice president and legal director of Americans United. "We anticipate that the Biden administration will agree with us that discrimination has no place in our public colleges and universities – even if religion is used to justify it.”
