U.S. House Votes In Favor Of D.C. Voucher Program

  AU admin

A measure that reauthorizes private school vouchers for Washington, D.C., is moving through Congress, despite opposition from the White House.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 4901, which would reauthorize the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, in April. The U.S. Senate has not yet voted on its version of the measure, reported The Washington Times.

In a statement, the federal Office of Management and Budget said it had significant concerns about the program. “Rigorous evaluation over several years demonstrates that D.C. vouchers have not yielded statistically significant improvements in student achievement by scholarship recipients compared to other students not receiving vouchers,” it said.

Americans United opposes the program. In conjunction with the National Coalition for Public Education, AU’s legislative team wrote to the U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee opposing the program’s reauthorization.
