A Knox County, Tenn., same-sex couple has filed a lawsuit against a public school physical education teacher, saying he used a popular basketball program to recruit students into fundamentalist Christianity.

The couple, who are listed as K.K. and K.K. in court papers, say the teacher, Chuck Comer, promoted a group called “Teens for Christ,” and that he criticized LGBTQ people during talks to the students.

The women have a son, identified as A.K., who attends West Valley Middle School in Knoxville.

The parents claim that their son wanted to join a school-sponsored basketball program, but that Comer used it to promote his version of Christianity, reported WBIR-TV in Knoxville.

It goes on to allege that Comer spent about 30 minutes twice a week reading the Bible and interpreting it for students. The lawsuit says that Comer not only criticized LGBTQ people but condemned same-sex relationships as sinful.

The couple says school officials were aware of what was going on. (K.K. and K.K. v. Comer)
