French lawmakers are debating a bill designed to ensure that Muslim immigrants honor the nation’s traditions, including its official policy of government secularism.
The bill takes aim at “Islamism,” the idea that Muslims should live separately from larger French culture and society. Many French politicians believe that separatism encourages the spread of radicalized forms of Islam and terrorism.
Under the bill, Islamic home-schooling and unaccredited private academies would be shuttered. Steps would be taken to ensure that mosques do not fall under the control of forces outside the country and forced marriages would be banned, reported Religion News Service.
