Americans United has joined an effort calling for an end to all forms of discrimination against LGBTQ students, teachers and staff in education.

Americans United was among 235 civil rights and education organizations that signed a Sept. 10 open letter citing the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County that said it is illegal to discriminate against people based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

In light of the ruling, the letter said, educational institutions from grade schools to colleges and universities should adopt policies that ensure the equality of LGBTQ Americans.

“This landmark decision from the Court is a powerful tool for changing education environments, both at K-12 schools and in higher education, for the better by removing those barriers that are impeding LGBTQ+ students and educators – especially those who are also people of color – from being safe and affirmed in schools and college campuses across the country,” the letter reads.
