Americans United Joins Campaign Opposing LGBTQ Discrimination And Bias

Americans United Joins Campaign Opposing LGBTQ Discrimination And Bias

Americans United is among the cosponsors of Faith for Equality, a new coalition of faith-based and policy organizations that support nondiscrimination protections that would protect gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in jobs, public accommodations and housing.

The coalition, which contains more than 120 organizations, points to new data released by Public Religion Research Institute’s American Values Atlas showing that 69% of religious Americans support these nondiscrimination provisions.

“We can’t let the religious right continue to spread misinformation that LGBTQ rights and religion are in conflict,” observes the campaign’s website. “We must correct the record and ensure that the public, the media, and lawmakers understand the strong and growing support for LGBTQ rights among religious Americans.”

The coalition adds, “Across the country – in red states, blue states, and purple states – there is unmistakable support for nondiscrimination protections. Not only are courageous religious leaders stepping forward to make the moral argument for LGBTQ rights, but now we have data to prove that most religious Americans, even those in battleground states, are supportive of these efforts. The goal of the Faithful Majority campaign is to raise public awareness of this strong religious support for LGBTQ rights by activating our networks and faith leaders to share this data widely through op-eds, social media, legislative meetings, and other contact with Senators.”

Anchoring organizations include Faith in Public Life, Union for Reform Judaism, Anti-Defamation League, Hindus for Human Rights, Interfaith Alliance and National Council for Jewish Women.

Congress needs to hear from you!

Urge your legislators to co-sponsor the Do No Harm Act today.

The Do No Harm Act will help ensure that our laws are a shield to protect religious freedom and not used as a sword to harm others by undermining civil rights laws and denying access to health care.
