Whenever I hear someone – especially a politician – say that the First Amendment protects freedom of religion, not freedom from religion, I just want to start screaming.
A funny thing happens when state lawmakers advance the Religious Right’s agenda: It can end up costing that state a ton of money. Big bills are a problem for even the staunchest allies of the Religious Right, and that has led to a change of heart in Texas when it comes to funding family planning services.
Religious freedom need not be a complicated concept. You can believe what you like. You have the right to worship the god (or gods) of your choice – or worship no god at all if you like.
