Faith-Based Fibber?: Liberty U. Seminary President Accused Of Fabricating Life Story

The last time we heard from Ergun Caner, the president of Liberty University’s seminary, he was riding around his Lynchburg, Va., campus on Election Day in a truck (accompanied by a GOP elephant made out of chicken wire) urging students to vote for Republican candidates.

Americans United asserted that Caner’s overt electioneering was just another example of the fundamentalist school’s determination to push candidates favored by Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr., despite a federal law that forbids tax-exempt religious institutions from intervening in partisan politics. Memo To Lynchburg: Jerry Falwell Jr. Is Watching You (And Secretly Recording It All)

Better watch what you say if you’re in a meeting with Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr.

According to a report in the Lynchburg (Va.) News & Advance this week, Falwell secretly videotaped a get-together between university representatives, the mayor and the city manager about the school’s zoning proposals.

The newspaper said Falwell signed off on the recording, which was made by concealing a camera behind some books. Read more

Venomous Visitors: Religious Right Leaders Had Run Of Bush White House

It is hardly a secret that the Religious Right helped elect President George W. Bush and exercised extraordinary influence with his administration. But if we need more evidence, it's just been put on the table.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Government (CREW) has just released a report tallying visits to the Bush White House by major Religious Right players. CREW filed a request for visitor records that coughed up the information. Read more

October Surprise: The Day Sen. Kennedy Laid Down The (Church-State) Law At Liberty University

U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy certainly led an interesting life. Known as a champion of the poor and downtrodden, he was also a powerful advocate for religious liberty and church-state separation who was adept at forging unlikely alliances with conservative Republicans.

One of the more unusual episodes in Kennedy's life occurred on Oct. 3, 1983, when the senator spoke at what was then known as Liberty Baptist College in Lynchburg, Va. -- now Liberty University.

That's right – Kennedy once gave a major address at the Rev. Jerry Falwell's school! Read more

Staver Palaver: Falwell Law School's Mean Dean Defames Americans United

Is Americans United for Separation of Church and State "one of the most dangerous organizations in America"?

Mat Staver seems to think so.

Staver, dean of the late Jerry Falwell's Liberty University Law School and president of Liberty Counsel, went on a tiresome tirade about AU in today's edition of One News Now, the wacky Wildmon family's "news service."

What could have provoked Staver's ire? Read more

Falwell Fast One?: Lynchburg Preacher's Sectarian House Prayer Doesn't Track Chaplain's Online Version

This weekend, for the first time since I have lived here, I found myself at a Washington-area Hindu temple.

That's because my parents were in town, and when my mom visits, it's on the top of her to-do list. So to satisfy my mother, and my religious quota for a while, I spent 10 to 15 minutes at a local temple.

I may not spend much time praying, but I still consider myself a Hindu and a follower of the faith. I don't need to listen to prayer all the time or have images of my faith displayed all around to know that. Read more

Falwell Falsehoods: Liberty U. Chancellor Lies About Americans United

A propensity toward prevarication seems to run in the Falwell family.

Americans United staffers used to repeatedly note that the Rev. Jerry Falwell Sr. once preached a sermon in which he said, "I hope to live to see the day, when, as in the early days of our country, there won't be any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!" Read more
