The Religious Right Empire Strikes Back: Fundamentalists Target Churches For 2014 Elections

We’re just a few months removed from the 2012 elections, and the Religious Right is already hard at work trying to lure churches into partisan politics for the 2014 elections.

This week, Mat Staver’s Liberty Counsel, which is affiliated with Jerry Falwell Jr.’s Liberty University, said it is gearing up to help fundamentalists take “dominion” over the United States and make us a “Christian nation.”

Florida Cop-out: Lawsuit Settlement Allows Christian College Students To Get State Grants

We often say that the Religious Right and its allies don’t give up easily, now here’s some proof. Less than one month after the overwhelming defeat of Florida’s Amendment 8, which would have allowed taxpayer money to flow to religious institutions, students attending a fundamentalist Christian college have been made eligible to participate in a state-funded grant program.

Stormy Weather: Why Is Pat Robertson Refusing To Use His Hurricane-Deflecting Powers To Help His Friends In The GOP?

The Republican Party is meeting in Tampa this week to formally nominate Mitt Romney as its presidential candidate. The convention was supposed to get under way today, but there’s a big problem: Tropical Storm Isaac. Florida officials have declared a state of emergency as the storm, which is expected to be a Category 2 hurricane by the time it makes landfall, bears down on the Gulf Coast.

This had led several people to ask: Why is Pat Robertson sitting on his hands?

‘Inspiration’ Repudiation: Florida Schools Wisely Reject Mendacious ‘Message’ Law

Like a tree falling in a forest when no one is around, Florida’s new “inspirational message” law may not make much noise.

The measure, which went into effect July 1, allows school boards to adopt policies that “inspirational messages” – including prayer – at “noncompulsory” school events, including graduations and other assemblies. Students would deliver the prayers/messages, and school officials aren’t supposed to interfere or try to influence their content.

Lowe Down: Hardware Chain Should Not Have Caved To Religious Right Blowhards

I am the humble servant of a non-profit organization and have never really aspired to be a high-powered corporate public-relations man. But today I’m going to step into that role and offer some free advice to Lowe’s Home Improvement and any firm facing the threat of a boycott from fundamentalist zealots.

My advice is simple: Ignore them. When you ignore them, nothing happens. When you cave in to them, lots of things happen – all of them bad.

Schools For Scandal: Fla. Voucher Program Proves A Boon To Con Artists

It’s an article of faith among school voucher proponents that if we move toward a privatized system of education, competition will spur the creation of excellent schools.

That’s the theory. How does it work out in real life?

Not so well. In Florida, which has been using students with physical and learning disabilities as subjects in a privatization experiment, parents are learning the hard way that many private schools don’t really care about educating children. Their owners are just interested in making a fast buck.
