Roy Moore’s Defeat Exposes The Religious Right’s Moral Vacuum

“Ten Commandments judge” Roy Moore wasn’t the only loser Tuesday night. He dragged plenty of leaders and followers of the Religious Right down with him.

Moore’s candidacy was a moral test for the Religious Right. The question was simple: Would the men and women who lead and join groups that are allegedly obsessed with “morals” and “values” continue to back Moore even in the face of credible charges of sexual assault and harassment against teenage girls?

Constitutional Correction: Another Tennessee School Board Forced To End School-Sponsored Religion

It seems that some school boards in middle Tennessee have a lot to learn about religious freedom.

The Sumner County Board of Education has just settled a lawsuit brought by the ACLU of Tennessee after nine students complained that teachers led classroom prayers, religious organizations distributed Bibles at school, school events were held in churches and youth ministers preached to children unsupervised in school lunchrooms.

Last night, my wife and I attended the annual winter concert at my son’s middle school. Paul plays a mean clarinet, and I was proud to see him on stage with the advanced band tooting away on a variety of songs.

The pieces were drawn from various cultures. We heard an old Russian song called “Minka’s Sleigh Ride,” a Japanese folk tune titled “Sakura, Sakura” and my personal favorite – “The Three-Minute Nutcracker,” all of your favorite numbers from the Nutcracker ballet condensed into 180 seconds.
