On a blustery day last May, the Rev. Steven Baines stood in the shadow of a 43-foot-tall cross on public land in San Diego, Calif., and told a crowd of about 50 that the towering religious symbol violates church-state separation. 

Defenders say the cross honors military veterans of all faiths and should stay put. But Baines, who is the assistant field director for religious outreach at Americans United, told listeners that argument is bad law and bad theology. Read more
