Lynn v. Virginia College Building Authority (Regent University)

AU filed suit in state court in June 1999 to prevent the granting of over $50 million in state low-interest bonds to Regent University, an arm of Pat Robertson’s ministry. After a trial held on July 29, 1999, the Virginia Circuit Court agreed that Regent University is pervasively sectarian and prohibited the University from participating in the bond program. On appeal, in a decision issued in November 2000, in a 7-2 decision, the Virginia Supreme Court reversed the lower court and upheld the award of bonds to Regent University, reasoning that bond funds constitute "indirect" aid and can thus permissibly be given to pervasively sectarian institutions and be put to religious use.
