Opening Plenary: At the Intersections of Justice
Religious freedom ensures that you can decide whether or how to pray, that you cannot be banned from entering this country because of your religion, and that no one else can use his or her religious beliefs to harm you or deny your civil rights and civil liberties. However, President Trump and his allies have doubled down on efforts to reshape our critical American value of religious freedom from a shield to protect into a sword to harm others. In this plenary, AU partners from 3 different justice movements will explore how the misuse of religious freedom has impacted their communities and how we move forward together. Hilary Shelton, Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Policy, NAACP; Nimra Azmi, Staff Attorney, Muslim Advocates; Mara Keisling, Executive Director, National Center for Transgender Equality; Sarah Gillooly, VP of State Outreach & Engagement, Americans United
