Americans United for Separation of Church and State today announced the hiring of a new director of strategic communications.

Tali Israeli, a veteran of several Washington, D.C. nonprofits and Capitol Hill offices, is AU’s new strategic communications director. In this position, Israeli will shape an aggressive communications strategy to boost AU’s visibility as the nation’s leading organization defending the separation of church and state. Employing traditional, digital and advocacy communications, she will guide the organization’s messaging strategies to the media, political leaders, the legal community and the public.

“Separation of church and state is under sustained attack by the Trump-Pence administration,” Israeli said. “I believe this vital constitutional principle deserves nothing less than a full-throttle defense, and I look forward to joining the fight.”

Most recently, Israeli worked as global and client business development director for Burson-Marsteller, a global public relations and communications firm. Prior to that, Israeli was communications director for Climate Action Campaign and senior communications manager at Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign. She has worked in the press offices of U.S. Reps. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.) and Allyson Schwartz (D-Pa.), as well as in several field programs for presidential and congressional races.

Israeli, who began her duties at Americans United Oct. 10, holds a degree in journalism and creative writing from the University of Arizona. She succeeds Rob Boston, who has served as Americans United’s communications director since 2013. Boston will assume a position as a senior adviser and continue his duties as editor-in-chief of AU’s Church & State magazine.

Rachel Laser, who was named president and CEO of Americans United in February, said the hiring of Israeli is crucial as the organization leads the ongoing fight to protect the core American principle of church-state separation and preserve religious freedom for all.

“The addition of Tali to the staff will provide Americans United with an exciting, forward-looking energy,” said Laser. “I’m thrilled to have her aboard as we undertake the critical work of defending America’s first freedom at this time of unprecedented threat.”

Americans United for Separation of Church and State is a religious liberty watchdog group based in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1947, the organization educates Americans about the importance of church-state separation in safeguarding religious freedom.
