Americans United for Separation of Church and State applauded today’s ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which affirmed a lower court’s opinion that President Donald J. Trump’s Muslim ban should be blocked from going into effect.

Americans United Legal Director Richard B. Katskee released the following statement:

“We applaud the 9th Circuit for recognizing that Muslim Ban 3.0, just like the two previous versions, continues to harm Muslim Americans, who are being cruelly kept apart from their families and loved ones.

“We stand with leaders from both parties, as well as countless other advocates and fair-minded Americans, who oppose the Muslim ban. We urge the U.S. Supreme Court to end this ban, a blemish on our long history of religious freedom.”

Republican and Democratic leaders alike have condemned the ban, which has also been blocked repeatedly by courts around the country.

Americans United is also challenging Trump’s Muslim ban in the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Together with Muslim Advocates and the law firm Covington & Burling LLP, and in consultation with the National Iranian American Council, Americans United filed Iranian Alliances Against Borders (IAAB) v. Trump – the first lawsuit filed against Muslim Ban 3.0. IAAB v. Trump’s plaintiffs include IAAB, a nonprofit serving the Iranian American community, and six individuals, all of whom are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents with relatives who are blocked from coming to the United States while the Muslim ban is in effect.
