Barry Lynn Appears on Nickelodeon’s Freedom to Believe…Or Not

On Sunday, April 17, at 9 p.m. Eastern time, Americans United Executive Director Barry W. Lynn’s appears in “Freedom to Believe…Or Not,” a special production of the popular cable channel’s “Nick News with Linda Ellerbee.” Lynn is interviewed along with TV preacher Pat Robertson on religious freedom in America.

In a press release about the program, Ellerbee stated, “For some kids, the freedom to believe has become truly personal. There are kids caught in a crossfire of belief in communities where to be different is to be scary. There are kids who are atheists, who endure discrimination and sometimes persecution, although they have the right not to believe in a god. And there are kids who say that it’s not about what you believe, but the rights of other people to believe what they believe.”

The program features a 14-year-old Muslim in Murfreesboro, Tenn., where there has been tension over plans by Muslims to build a mosque, and a 14-year-old atheist student in Auburn, Ala., who wants to start a freethinkers club at his school but has been unable to find a teacher to sponsor it.

Nickelodeon airs a number of programs aimed at a youth audience. Its programming includes “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Dora the Explorer” and “Blue’s Clues.”
