The Vatican is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. Although it occupies a small patch of land in Italy, it has few of the trappings of a sovereign state. In addition, the United States has diplomatic relations with the Holy See, a purely ecclesiastical body, not the Vatican City State. Americans United believes it is inappropriate for the U.S. government to have an official diplomatic relationship with a church. For this reason, we oppose U.S.-Vatican ties.
