Religious freedom is the right to believe – or not. We all want to be free to follow our conscience without the government forcing us to practice a religion we do not follow.
Keeping a healthy distance between government and religion ensures that all of us, believers and non-believers alike, are treated equally. Whether going to school, attending the town council meeting or accessing a government service, no one should face discrimination because he or she doesn’t believe in God.
The First Amendment protects everyone, including those who profess no faith or practice no religion. That’s why Americans United fights for religious freedom and the rights of atheists, agnostics, humanists and all other non-theists.
