Subscribe to RSS - The Faith-Based Initiative & Government Subsidies of Religious Institutions

The so-called “faith-based” initiative is a euphemism for taxpayer-supported religion. The initiative funnels taxpayer dollars to religious social service providers without adequate safeguards to prevent proselytism. In addition, these groups seek to discriminate in hiring based on religion even though their programs are publicly funded.

Truth Is Elastic To Trump, But The Religious Right Loves Him Anyway

It’s been less than two weeks since President Donald J. Trump and his administration transitioned into power, and chaos and protests over their actions have already erupted.

But one group, in particular, remains mum on criticizing the Trump administration’s words and actions: the Trump-loving Religious Right.

Trump’s High Court Nominee Neil Gorsuch: Another Scalia On Church-State Issues

President Donald Trump this evening nominated Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Trump had promised to fill the open slot on the high court with someone who holds “similar views and principles” to the late Justice Antonin Scalia. Unfortunately, it appears that Trump has acted to fulfill that promise. Like Scalia, Gorsuch has exhibited hostility to church-state separation, which is the foundation of religious freedom. That is why Americans United opposes this nomination.

This Weekend At Dulles International Airport

This weekend, as people from seven Muslim-majority countries were either deported or detained due to President Donald Trump’s confusing and hastily written executive order, citizens of all stripes rushed to international airports around the country to protest. Hundreds of lawyers also rushed to the airports to offer legal assistance to those in need. I was one of those lawyers.

Attorney General Nominee Sessions Should Answer Questions About Involvement In Trump Decrees

Tomorrow, the Senate Judiciary Committee is poised to vote on the confirmation of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) as U.S. Attorney General. In anticipation of that vote, Americans United today joined nearly 200 other organizations on a letter organized by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights that urges the committee to question Sessions on his role in developing executive orders and proposals advanced by Pres. Donald Trump this month.

I Attended Creating Change 2017 And Came Back, Well, Changed

I recently had the privilege of attending the 2017 “Creating Change Conference” hosted by the National LGBTQ Task Force, which took place in Philadelphia last weekend. What an awesome sight in the City of LOVE!

There were more than 4,000 attendees from across the country, and all were energized and ready to stand up and fight for LGBTQ rights, which will no doubt be under attack this year.

Don’t Spend Spring Break With 'Christian Nation' Propagandist David Barton

Religious Right “Christian nation” advocate and pseudo-historian David Barton has a special offer for teachers: From March 15-17, he’ll be offering a conference at his home base in Aledo, Texas, “designed to equip teachers from both public and private schools with the principles and techniques that were used in early American education and thereafter for decades.”

AU Supports Faith Leaders In Opposing Ban on Muslim Immigrants

Americans United staff joined faith leaders Wednesday in voicing opposition to any efforts by the Trump administration to use religion as a reason to bar refugees and immigrants from the United States.

AU Faith Organizer Bill Mefford and I attended an afternoon press conference at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church and a prayer vigil at the White House to support Christian, Jewish and Muslim faith leaders who spoke out against an anticipated presidential order that would ban immigrants from predominantly Muslim countries and block Syrian refugees.

Guess What? Religious Right Islamophobes Don’t Really Care About Women’s Rights In The Middle East

Thanks to oppressive legislation and policies, restrictions on and interference with women’s rights plague many countries around the globe, regardless of the majority religion and the church-state arrangement in those nations.
