When religion is used as justification to deny health care, it puts patients’ health and well-being in jeopardy and can cause serious harm to those critically in need of care.
Yet politicians, employers, hospitals, medical professionals, insurance companies, pharmacies and others are denying Americans – most often women and LGBTQ Americans – access to health care in the name of religion.
Across the country religion is being used as an excuse to block access to comprehensive insurance coverage, birth control, emergency contraception, fertility treatments, abortion care and transition-related care. For example, health care providers should not deny patients full information about their treatment options in emergencies or refuse to refer patients to providers who can care for them.
Americans United is fighting back because religious freedom is a fundamental right, and so is the right to make your own decisions about health care.
