In April 1999, AU and the Kansas ACLU filed suit in federal court on behalf of several Manhattan residents challenging the placement of a Ten Commandments monument in front of the City Hall building. After the suit was filed, the City Commission voted to settle the lawsuit by removing the monument and providing the plaintiffs with an attorneys’ fee award, thereby concluding the case.
