There are many types of planned gifts that offer significant financial benefits to you, the donor. Often, they help you to make a larger gift than you thought you could afford. Your advisors can provide additional information about them and help you decide which is right for your personal financial circumstances. A few of the most common include:

Charitable Gift Annuity

This is a simple contract in which you donate cash or stock to AU and you receive in return a fixed dollar amount for your lifetime, or for your life and that of a second annuitant. The payment amount is based on your age(s) at the time of the gift. You are eligible for an income tax deduction in the year the contract is made. (Examples)

Deferred Charitable Gift Annuity

This gift is the same as the previous one, but defers your fixed dollar amount annuity payments until a future date that you select. Your income tax deduction and rate of return will be higher because your payment is deferred. (Example)

Charitable Remainder Trust

A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) is a trust that you create and fund with assets (e.g. cash, stock, real estate). You would then annually choose to receive either a fixed dollar amount or a fluctuating dollar amount based on a percent of the assets in the CRT for a pre-determined number of years. At the end of that pre-determined number of years, the remainder passes to Americans United. You are eligible for an income tax deduction in the year the CRT is funded.

Charitable Lead Trust

A Charitable Lead Trust (CLT) is a trust that you create and fund with assets (e.g. cash, stock, real estate). Americans United would receive either a fixed dollar amount or a fluctuating dollar amount based on a percent of the assets in the CLT each year, for a pre-determined number of years. At the end of the pre-determined period, the remainder passes to an individual or individuals you have designated in the trust document. Depending on the type of CLT you create, you may be eligible for an income tax deduction in the year the CLT is funded.

Revocable Deferred Gifts

Gifts of this nature are received by Americans United after you pass on and offer no immediate tax deduction because they can be revoked. These include living trusts, life insurance gifts and, of course, bequests. They do provide other benefits which your personal advisors can discuss with you.
