An Alabama candidate who claimed her campaign for county commissioner was endorsed by Jesus lost her re-election bid.
Jefferson County Commissioner Sandra Little Brown’s campaign distributed flyers that she was “supported by Jesus Christ and his followers.”
Michael Miller, the campaign manager of City Councilor Sheila Tyson, who ran against Brown, accused Brown’s campaign of attempting to highlight her religious beliefs while downplaying her policies.
“Using Jesus’ name I guess would make her seem a little more religious, but Jesus wouldn’t make the poor people suffer like Sandra has,” Miller said.
Brown stood by her flyers after getting criticism.
“We pray before we go out and we do anything. That is a divine piece of material that went out from this campaign [Saturday],” Brown said in a video. “I’m not afraid to own Jesus anywhere. This campaign is built upon righteousness from the beginning to the end. … If anybody got any problem with that ballot, then they got to see Jesus.”
Tyson defeated Brown 53 percent to 47 percent in the July 17 Democratic primary.
