A majority of Americans say employers should be required to include birth control coverage in their insurance plans, but are split on whether or not businesses should be required to serve couples of the same sex, according to a new poll.
In a survey released in September by the Pew Research Center: Religion & Public Life, 67 percent of respondents agreed that for-profit business owners with religious objections to contraceptives should nonetheless be required to offer birth control coverage in their employer-provided health insurance plans.
Unfortunately, results were mixed when it came to the matter of for-profit businesses with religious objections to marriage equality offering their services to couples of the same sex. Forty-nine percent of those polled said businesses do not have the right to discriminate against LGBTQ persons. Unsurprisingly, that percentage rose when individual respondents’ religious beliefs were taken into account. Of those who said they do not think being LGBTQ is morally wrong, 64 percent said businesses should serve all people regardless of their sexual preference. Just 22 percent of respondents who believe homosexuality is sinful said businesses must serve all comers.
