In the waning days of his administration, President Donald Trump issued an executive order designed to allow “disadvantaged” children to use federal money to pay for private school tuition through a voucher plan.
Under Trump’s Dec. 28 order, federal money allocated to the states under the Community Services Block Grant program, which is administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, could be used to pay for “private school tuition, home schooling, micro schooling, learning-pod expenses, special education services, or tutoring.”
The program allocates $700 million annually.
Politico reported that the move “helps to advance the Trump administration’s school choice agenda in its waning days in office.” But given that Trump issued the order just a few weeks before the end of his term, it was unclear whether it would be implemented. President Joe Biden, who opposes vouchers, has vowed to reverse many Trump initiatives.
