Listen this weekend for Rob Boston's insightful discussion with "This American Life" host Ira Glass. The one-hour PRI program, titled "Godless America" will explore the parameters of church-state relations at a time when House Majority Leader Tom Delay says he governs with a "Biblical worldview."
The history of church-state separation is the history of religious liberty in our Republic. Many misconceptions cloud our collective memory. Religious Right leaders often claim that America was founded as an officially Christian nation or that the First Amendment doesn't actually establish separation of church and state. Defenders of separation, however, point to the writings of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson for first-hand evidence of the founders' real intention to place a clear boundary between religion and government. The First Amendment clearly states: Congress shall make no law establishing religion or prohibit the free exercise thereof.
An expert on this history, Rob Boston will share some of extensive knowledge with "This American Life" listeners this weekend.
The program will broadcast between June 3rd and 5th in most areas and will be available as an audio stream on the "This American Life" web site next week.
