Recently Americans United, along with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), were chosen as the new co-chairs of the National Coalition for Public Education (NCPE). Established in 1978, the coalition is made up of over 50 education, civic, civil rights, and religious organizations that are committed to the strengthening of public schools. NCPE “opposes the funneling of public money to private and religious schools through such mechanisms as tuition tax credits and vouchers” and instead fights to keep those public funds in public schools where they belong.
As a co-chair of the coalition, AU has an important role in shaping the direction the coalition takes and what issues it weighs in on. In addition, we have an important responsibility of unifying the message of this diverse group of organizations into one cohesive voice in continued support of public education. One of the current issues on the NCPE agenda is opposition to the expansion of the DC Voucher program.
