Naples (FL) AU Hosts Rev. Barry Lynn

The Greater Naples Chapter of Americans United hosted a talk by Rev. Barry Lynn on "Vouchers and the Florida Tax Credit Scholarships."  Florida public education is often under attack by state legislators who want to funnel public money into private, mostly religious, schools.  

A lively question and answer session took place following Lynn's presentation. The event took place March 6th, at the Hilton Naples hotel. Read more

San Antonio AU Hosts Rev. Barry Lynn

On Wednesday, February 25, the San Antonio chapter hosted AU Executive Director Rev. Barry Lynn. Barry spoke on “Separation Anxiety: the First Amendment at Risk.” As both an ordained minister and constitution lawyer, Lynn often jokes that he can forgive misgivings tonight, and then file a lawsuit against you tomorrow!

Following his presentation, Barry took questions from the audience and also let them know he has a new book coming out later in the year!

Columbia (SC) AU Hosts Discussion on Church-State Separation

What are the big questions facing separation of church and state in Columbia and South Carolina? Chapter leaders and community members met at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia on Sunday, February 8, to discuss this challenging question. The state is facing issues around expanding SC tax credits for private schools, and prayer in public schools.

T-shirt Tangle: Ky. Court Rules ‘Christian’ Business Has ‘Religious Freedom’ Right To Discriminate Against Gays

The Fayette Circuit Court ruled this week that a Lexington, Ky.-based T-shirt printing company did not break the law when it refused to make shirts for the Gay and Lesbian Services Organization (GLSO). 

GLSO had intended to use the shirts in the city’s 2012 Pride Festival, and filed a complaint against the company with the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Human Rights Commission. The Commission ruled in GLSO’s favor, but Monday’s decision overturns that ruling. Read more
