"Reclaiming December" will be the topic presented by panelists Paul McCraw, Fleming El-Amin, Wilda Spalding, and Barry Geller at the Triad AU Chapter event on Tuesday, December 16, at the Polo Recreation Center, from 7:00-8:30 PM.

During the weeks following Thanksgiving, the commercial exploitation of Christmas is relentless and inescapable.  Many Americans, including Christians, end up feeling disrespected, and our rich cultural heritage gets lost amidst a plethora of Christmas trees, Santa Clauses, and midnight bargains.

Parody holidays like Festivus point to the problem but don't offer much insight into how we as a society can create a public space that honors the diverse beliefs of the American people and how we as private individuals can nurture and share our own traditions without imposing on or insulting our friends and colleagues whose beliefs differ from ours.

Members of the public who would like to share information about the observance of Advent, Bodhi Day, Arba'een, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Lucia's Day, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Pancha Ganapati, St. Stephen's Day, Kwanzaa, Mawlid an-Nabi, or Orthodox Christmas are especially welcome.
