Katherine Stewart, journalist and author of The Good News Club: The Christian Right’s Stealth Assault on America’s Children will speak in Portland, OR on June 9. Her topic, "How Religious Fundamentalism Threatens Oregon's Public Schools."
According to Stewart, there is more religion in public schools today than there has been in the past 100 years. Religious fundamentalists are “planting” churches in public schools, waging war on science education, and rewriting textbooks to conform to a Christian Nationalist agenda. After-school Good News Clubs target elementary school children for conversion to fundamentalism, creating the false but unavoidable impression that their school endorses that form of religion.
The movement driving this agenda is stealthy and aggressive. It has our children in its sights. And it represents a serious threat, not only to our system of public education, but to democracy itself.
If you live in the Portland, OR, area you won't want to miss this event. It's tonight, Tuesday, June 9, at 7 PM in Eliot Chapel at First Unitarian Church.
