Malaysia's highest federal court earlier this week refused to recognize the conversion of a Muslim-born woman to Christianity. The panel ruled 2-1 that the decision was beyond the secular court's discretion.
Lina Joy, 43, converted from Islam to Roman Catholicism in 1998. Her troubles began shortly thereafter when she tried to change her religious affiliation on her national identification card. Because Islam requires adherents to marry within the faith, Joy would not be allowed to wed her Catholic fiancée if she was registered as a Muslim. Read more
The implosion of the Alabama chapter of the Christian Coalition last year has sparked some interesting fallout. The two sides are now in court battling over assets and flinging inflammatory charges at one another.
In August of 2006, "The Wall of Separation" reported that John Giles, head of the Alabama Christian Coalition, decided the national group was losing relevance and jumped ship. Giles formed a new organization, Christian Action Alabama. Read more

Promotional material about the three-day "Salute to the Troops" celebration strongly implied that it was co-sponsored by the U.S. Air Force and Army alongside several evangelical groups: Task Force Patriot USA (TFP), Lifeway Christian Stores and Holman Bible Outreach International. Read more
The Rev. Jerry Falwell's funeral was yesterday and, predictably, President George W. Bush sent a representative. Tim Goeglein, White House liaison to religious groups, stepped into the pulpit of Thomas Road Baptist Church and praised Falwell as a visionary. Read more
Remember the Promise Keepers? The evangelical Christian men's organization was all the rage among the Religious Right in the mid to late 1990s. Headed by Bill McCartney, a former University of Colorado football coach, Promise Keepers vowed to usher in a new wave of fundamentalist Christian evangelism that would sweep the nation. Read more
Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich continued his relatively recent conversion to spewing Religious Right rhetoric with a speech about secularism run amok over the weekend at Liberty University.
Before his death last week, TV preacher Jerry Falwell had invited Gingrich to give this year's commencement address. As media outlets noted, Gingrich gave abundant praise to Falwell and claimed his passing should in no way lull "the left" into believing that Religious Right politicos in that mold are a thing of the past.
