Shepard's All Wet: Rain Man Reined In At Focus On The Family

It's good to know that there are some members and supporters of Focus on the Family (FOF) who do not believe God is petty and vindictive.

These FOF backers spoke up recently after Stuart Shepard, FOF's director of digital media, made a short video for the Religious Right group's Web site urging people to pray for rain during Sen. Barack Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. Obama plans to give the speech outdoors at Denver's Mile High Stadium, so rain would be very unwelcome. Read more

Public School Calumny: LaHaye Launches Vicious Attack On Public School System

I'm always amazed at the hatred the Religious Right aims at America's public school system.

Last Thursday, Concerned Women for America (CWA) sent out an email with the subject line: "Please Help Our Children." At first, I thought maybe the group had come up some sort of assistance program for needy youngsters.

What an incredibly foolish thought!

Defending Deceit: Religious Right Legal Group Fights For Duplicity On The Ballot

The folks at the Alliance Defense Fund seem to think voters vote best when they have no clue what they are voting on.

In California, voters will cast ballots in November on Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that, as the title states, "Eliminates the Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry."

Silly Sally: Kern Should Learn Some Facts About American History

Sally Kern, a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, says she has been called by God to be a cultural warrior.

Kern, a Religious Right favorite known for her strident attacks on gay people and insistence that her version of Christianity is the only true faith, told the Cleveland County Republican Luncheon Club recently that God urged her to run for office. Read more

Faith-Based Flight Pattern: White House Staffers Earn Their Wings, Thanks To Religious Right Cash

The White House is apparently a heavenly place to pick up some free travel, courtesy of religious lobbying groups.

According to a recent article in The Hill, White House travel records show that churches and other religious entities paid for close to a quarter of the privately funded trips taken by White House aides since late 2006. Read more

Fast Food Freak-out: The AFA Is Not Lovin' It At McDonald's

I admit to having a weakness for McDonald's french fries. There's just something about those thin slivers of golden-fried potatoes, seasoned with just the right amount of salt. I know too much of them isn't good for me but figure it's OK to indulge every now and then.

McDonald's fries might not help my cholesterol count, but eating them does have one benefit: It annoys the Religious Right. Read more
