Background
When President Obama campaigned for office, he outlined a plan to reform former President Bush’s 'Faith-Based' Initiative, but the Administration has done little to resolve the constitutional and civil rights controversies thus far. The “charitable choice” regulations, which allow for religious hiring discrimination in government-funded organizations among other measures, still apply to government grants. Moreover, there are four statutes containing “charitable choice” provisions and some will be up imminently for congressional reauthorization.
Possible questions/comments
Share with your Representative and Senators that you believe that jobs designated to serve the public good with taxpayer funds should be open to all Americans. Ask where they stand on this issue, and whether they would vote to remove charitable choice provisions from social service legislation.
