Reason In The Rotunda: Speaking Up For Church-State Separation In Minnesota’s Capitol

Every year around the National Day of Prayer (NDP) – which occurred last Thursday – Americans United gets really busy.

Media outlets and various interest groups want to hear our take on the government-mandated day to pray, which started in 1952 when Congress passed a federal statute ordering the president to declare a prayer day each year. (In 1998, the NDP was codified as the first Thursday of every May.)

Armageddon Weekend?: It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And They Don’t Feel Fine)

One of my favorite places in Washington, D.C., is the National Mall. When you stand in the center with the U.S. Capitol on one end, the Washington Monument on the other and the Smithsonian museums flanking the sides, you can’t help but feel you’re having the quintessential D.C. experience.

Because the mall is so popular, it has become a type of free-speech zone. People often stand around hoisting signs with various political or religious messages and pass out literature.

Rochester (NY) Chapter "From Darwin to Dover"

The Rochester, NY Chapter is sponsoring an event to discuss the role of Intelligent Design in American life. “From Darwin to Dover: The Rise and Decline of Intelligent Design,” will feature video from the Nova program “Judgment Day,” a look into the 2005 Dover, PA case ruling ID was inherently religious. Additionally, footage of Judge Jones describing his ruling will complement discussion on the role of science and public school education.

Barton Baloney: New York Times Shines Light On Religious Right ‘Historian’

David Barton is the scariest Religious Right leader you never heard of.

But that’s beginning to change. Today, The New York Times offered readers a front-page report on Barton, a “self-taught historian who is described by several conservative presidential aspirants as a valued adviser and a source of historical and biblical justification for their policies.”

A-OK In Arkansas: School Administrator Admonishes Proselytizing Teacher

Next month marks the 49th anniversary of the first U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down officially sponsored prayer in public schools. The decision in Engel v. Vitale was issued on June 25, 1962.

The case is nearly half a century old, so it’s not like it’s fresh news. It’s always something of a surprise, then, when word gets out about teachers who decide to openly defy the Constitution.

Biological Warfare: Battles Under Way In Texas And Louisiana Over Science Education

It looks like Texas is due for another round of fussing and fighting over creationism in public schools.

The state Board of Education continues to be dominated by Religious Right zealots who refuse to accept modern science and seek to teach religiously based concepts in biology classes. (They also reject accepted history. Remember, these are the people who hired “Christian nation” propagandist David Barton to help rewrite their social studies standards.)
