Forbes’ Folly: Defeated Congressman Takes Another Potshot At Church-State Wall

Last week we reported that U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes (R-Va.) a longtime ally of the Religious Right, had lost his primary election and thus will not be returning to the Congress.

Forbes has decided to go out with a bang. Over the weekend, he published an opinion piece in a Virginia newspaper attacking the separation of church and state -- again.

Focus On The Problems: Public School Districts Are Using A Religious Right Group’s Materials In Classes

Some public school districts are using a Religious Right group’s materials for health and “character education” classes, church-state activist Zack Kopplin reported yesterday for ThinkProgress. Focus on the Family’s children’s shows, parenting training and other instructional materials are currently promoted by a number of school districts in several states.

Doing Damage: Committee Says IRS Failure To Update Church Audit Procedures Is Harming The Agency

A private-sector committee that advises the Internal Revenue Service branch that oversees tax-exempt organizations says the IRS is “compromising its relevancy” by failing to revise the procedures that govern audits of churches.

In a lengthy report covering many areas of tax exemption, the Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities (ACT) said last week that the IRS’s leadership has dropped the ball when it comes to policing houses of worship that violate federal law.

Exploiting Orlando: The Threat Of Rhetoric That Divides Instead Of Unites

Over the weekend, Americans United joined thousands of people here in Washington, D.C., at Capital Pride. We had an informational booth there and were pleased to meet with many people who support our mission.

Inevitably, the tragic murders of 49 people and the wounding of dozens more at a gay club in Orlando early Sunday morning weighed on the minds of many. But the horrific attack didn’t deter people from attending D.C.’s event. AU was pleased to be there and considered it an opportunity to show our support for the LGBTQ community at this difficult time.

Pious Proclamation Panned: Iowa’s Governor Goes Around The Bend With Bible-Touting Document

Some elected officials have a bad habit of releasing official proclamations lauding the Bible, Christianity or religion generally.

We at Americans United find these proclamations to be extremely annoying, but judges have not been very sympathetic to efforts to try to block them in court. They usually say that these proclamations are just suggestions that don’t require anyone to do anything and therefore they pass constitutional muster.

Barton Bunk: Religious Right ‘Historian’ Claims People Who Criticize Him ‘Hate America’

David Barton is still David Barton, which means the Religious Right’s favorite fake historian is once again distorting facts to suit his own agenda.

Last week, Barton appeared on a right-wing radio program called “The Patriot and The Preacher,” hosted by Mark Anthony – a former tech sector worker with a self-described “passion” for history – and the Rev. Ben Kinchlow – a former co-host on Pat Robertson’s “The 700 Club.”

Birth Control Battles: The Theocrats’ Long War On Contraceptive Access

Yesterday marked the 51st anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut, a landmark Supreme Court decision that broadened access to contraception. In a 7-2 decision, the nation’s highest court found that the Connecticut Comstock Act of 1879, which banned contraceptives, violated the Fourteenth Amendment right to privacy.
