Americans United for Separation of Church and State — the nation’s leading church-state advocacy organization — is accepting applications from deferred law-firm associates for a one-year Volunteer Fellowship with our organization beginning in the Fall of 2010.
Americans United has a diverse litigation and amicus curiae practice addressing a wide variety of church-state issues, including religious activities in the public schools, government-sponsored religious displays, and public financing of parochial schools and religious social-service providers. Most of our cases are litigated in the federal courts and involve novel, cutting-edge constitutional questions.
The Volunteer Fellow will receive substantial experience and training in all aspects of trial and appellate litigation. Our fellowship attorneys conduct research, draft pleadings and discovery, and write briefs; they screen incoming complaints and assist with identifying new cases; and they conduct non-litigation advocacy in an effort to resolve claims without resorting to litigation. Although we cannot promise that the Volunteer Fellow will perform any particular task, past fellowship attorneys have prepared briefs in cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and federal and state appellate courts across the country and have presented oral arguments, questioned witnesses, and introduced evidence at the trial-court level.
Compensation
We will not be able to provide compensation to the Volunteer Fellow.
